Seeing a need to bring an end to bed
poverty in this area, the Friend's Class at Sierra Vista UMC formed Bunk and
a Prayer to provide hands-on solutions. We've consistently grown, all thanks to the helping hands of this amazing community.
Bunk and a Prayer focuses on making the maximum positive effort for our community. Our volunteers provide the momentum that helps us affect change. Using our time and hands, we provide immediate solutions that make a long-lasting difference.
Feeling the need to address the wide-spread issue of bed poverty in our area, we formed Bunk and a Prayer to provide a hands-on solution. We joined with the social service groups who are aware of these immediate needs and started to work. We've consistently grown since then, all thanks to the helping hands of this amazing group who have chosen to step up and do something that makes an immediate impact to their community and the lives of those in need.
Sleep is one of the top 5 necessities for survival. Those who live below the poverty line lack the resources to provide these basic necessities. Not having an adequate bed leads to a poor night of sleep, lower sleep quality and even sleep deprivation. Bed poverty takes one of the largest tolls on impoverished children, many who live day by day in survival mode. Childhood and adolescence are crucial times in a child's life for physical development and learning. Children that suffer from sleep deprivation often have lower academic achievement due to impaired cognitive functions, in addition to lower immune system function, mood swings, lack of concentration and memory impairment, and maladaptive school behavior. Having the security of knowing where they will sleep that night and having a clean, comfortable bed, provides not only improvement of sleep, but better self-esteem, peace of mind, and academic success. Sadly, many of the children we serve sleep on the floor or with multiple children to a bed. Some have been removed from an unhealthy home environment and are being placed in foster care. Bunk and a Prayer's goal is to give them a little comfort and security so they can get a good night's sleep and find rest for another day.
This year, Bunk and a Prayer has expanded their ministry to provide not only bunk beds for children
but full and queen-sized beds for seniors who have recently relocated to new housing through
Silver Tree Residential, an agent of the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Bund and a Prayer is excited to join efforts with
Silver Tree Residential to provide new beds and bedding
to residents of Oak Grove Senior Apartments.
I want to join with you to provide beds to the low-income in the Concho Valley. All donations are tax-deductible and go directly to support the ministry.
