Bunk and a Prayer began when the Friends' Sunday School Class, operating under the umbrella of Sierra Vista United Methodist Church, decided to be more than hearers of the Word, but to put their beliefs into action.
We committed to heed the call of Matthew 25:40: "truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me."
Bunk and a Prayer is determined to go beyond just sending a check. They identified a need and picked up their hammers and made it happen. They are making an investment of one of their most precious resources, their time.
In 2020, a group of 18 friends started building bunk beds to address the issue of bed-poverty in
San Angelo and the Tom Green County area. Since then, we have placed many new and refurbished
beds to meet the needs of abused and neglected children and their families.
The families we serve are previously vetted by
Rust Street Ministries,
Alcohol & Drug Awareness Center for the Concho Valley,
Galilee Community Development Corporation,
Silver Tree, LLC, Senior Living Centers,
Children's Advocacy Center of Greater West Texas,
Housing Authority of San Angelo, including their new
program Ending Veteran Homelessness in San Angelo,
Catholic Outreach Services of San Angelo,
Disability Connections for Independent Living, and
San Angelo State Supported Living Center,
a division of Texas Health & Human Services.
Our volunteers have been trained and have passed security background checks that allow them to enter the homes where the children in crisis are staying and meet their immediate need.
Beds are delivered and assembled for each person.
We supply them an appropriate bed for their age and size
including a new mattress, pillow and bedding.
Our average costs for beds are:
Each case has individual needs, subsequently price and availability of beds vary case by case. When the Friend's Class can find good used beds at Goodwill, Bargain Cave, Facebook Marketplace or other bargain centers, they clean, repair and refurbish beds to help defray costs.
